I am fortunate that my neighborhood lacks large tracts of turf, so our population is almost non-existent. However, growing up in the Richmond suburbs they were a scourge. For a science project my brother raised ducks one summer, and we found that if you held a duck up to a beetle covered rose or grapevine, the duck make very quick work of them, just like a beetle devouring appliance.Leshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18281256160705697856noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8362037601559788546.post-6297161555016577052013-07-14T17:15:24.476-04:002013-07-14T17:15:24.476-04:00Sunil, I think if you had Japanese beetles they...Sunil, I think if you had Japanese beetles they'd be heading for your roses! I don't know if they are these Japanese beetles, I hope not. Mine should perhaps be called "mediterranean beetle" because they seem to be only on the lavender and rosemary shrubs, no where else. I think they do take little nibbles out of the lavender leaves but the damage is pretty insubstantial and doesn't seem to affect the plants.Sunil Patelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17998062749546109287noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8362037601559788546.post-65114137042498183252013-07-14T15:47:35.757-04:002013-07-14T15:47:35.757-04:00Great post! Next year could be another story. Eeeek... But, that's the kind of thing that keep gardening interesting!Teresa / The Garden Diaryhttp://thegardendiary.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8362037601559788546.post-35863353355712431802013-07-13T18:06:25.693-04:002013-07-13T18:06:25.693-04:00Janneke, I may be wrong but I don't think you ...Janneke, I may be wrong but I don't think you have them in your area and you should be glad. I actually used to cut back the roses every year when they arrived so I didn't have to witness the disfiguring damage. On the other hand, we love our cardinals! Just this morning Mr. and Mrs C were on the deck and he was feeding her seeds.Lynn Hunthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12726341040976568748noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8362037601559788546.post-83656201828450168382013-07-13T17:19:08.990-04:002013-07-13T17:19:08.990-04:00I don't think I have met these Japanese beetl...I don't think I have met these Japanese beetles in my roses until now, but on the other side they look rather familiar, but there are so many, many different beetles and other enemies of our plants. It should be lovely to have these beautiful cardinals in the garden.Janneke https://www.blogger.com/profile/11056916431881916066noreply@blogger.com
