Free mountain vacation exclusively for Dirt Diaries readers!

It's August and for most people that means vacation, staycation or as they say in the UK, summer hols.

Unfortunately, the Hunts aren't taking any big trips this year. The pocketbook is still recovering from our month-long adventure Down Under, but that's no hardship since every day seems like a vacation here in the mountains.

My mother and a Daytona friend are coming up from Florida this weekend for the first time since we moved to North Carolina. I'm anxious for them to see as many of my favorite local haunts as possible and I thought I'd invite the Dirt Diaries gang to tag along.

So, welcome to my world. Enjoy your stay.

I'll be back soon with postings on an exciting new rose, dahlias, fairy gardens, terrariums and much more.

In the meantime, be sure to let us know if there is anything we can do to make your mountain holiday more enjoyable.

Moonshine, shower caps and bear repellent are available at the front desk.

Head for Pisgah Forest and Looking Glass Falls (scenes from The Hunger Games were filmed near here.)

Mother's going to love this!
Nature's own waterslide is just down the road.

A trip to the Biltmore is a must
The perennial borders at Biltmore are breathtaking
An espaliered Rose of Sharon

Play golf and check out waterfalls at the same time in Brevard!

Preview one of the settings for the new Dirty Dancing at Fairfield Lake(What's wrong with the OLD Dirty Dancing?)
High Hampton is another Dirty Dancing destination

Number 8 is High Hampton's signature hole

Visit Wolfe's Angel in Hendersonville. You might see a white squirrel along the way
Or sit by our waterfall with an adult beverage

And enjoy the mountain view from the deck

OMG - I want to be there NOW! It looks so serene and COOL! We are still roasting up here. Your pictures are beautiful as usual. You are so multi-talented it makes me feel inadequate. Keep those pics and articles coming! Sandy

Thank you so much Sandy! Wish I could send some of our cool air your way -- it was 65 late yesterday after a storm came through.

You are too humble about your talents, girl. You shine in so many ways (and now world's best granny!)

Ooooh! I want to go to Jump Off Rock! And Laurel Lake! And can we stop at the Guild Crafts store on the Parkway? Please?

Your (our) area has a lot to offer. Know they will enjoy their trip.

Lynn Hunt said...

We are lucky aren't we Janet? Now if I can just drive slowly enough around those curves to make Mother feel at ease (:

Looks like no shortage of excellent options. I's love to visit those gardens at the Biltmore.

Lynn Hunt said...

Jason, sounds like a plan. If you visit I'll drive up and meet you there!

it looks a wonderful place to go for a holiday. In reality it may be a bit far away, and a bit too expensive - but you never know dd, I may get there one day!

Lynn Hunt said...

Catmint I can say the same about the wonderful area near your hometown of Melbourne. The Great Ocean Road showed us one spectacular scene after another from waterfalls to ocean panoramas. And I saw a koala in the wild. Would love to return and explore more places there (and go back to the fantastic downtown flea market!)

Joan, wish you were too!

Hi Lynn, - just wow - I don't want to go to work tomorrow, I want to pack it all in and go THERE! Is that an albino squirrel in the tree? Unfortunately, I couldn't leave the garden, so I'll do the next best thing, which is to make a nice cup of tea, sit back and enjoy the pictures.

Lynn said...

Cheers Sunil! So glad you enjoyed your mini holiday. Come back to visit as often as you wish!

No that is not an albino, there are actually white squirrels living in the area. Supposedly a carnival truck overturned in the Brevard area in the late 40's and these squirrels escaped and now thrive here. There is even a Whit Squirrel festival in the summer.

Funny enough the friend visiting with my mother wanted to check out the White Squirrel Shoppe this morning. After she made several purchases, we drove around and spotted one. She was thrilled! Take care.

Hello, thanks for visiting my blog! I have had a look around your blog tonight and I can see we have more than an interst in David Austin roses in common :-) Will be back for a second helping some other time. Cheers!

I just love this area of the country. I wish I could go back again in person - perhaps some day. Thanks so much for the pictures.

Will look forward to your next visit Helene!

HolleyGarden, I'm delighted you were able to stop by. I love your blog (Roses and other Gardening Joys) but was sad to read about the damage to the butterflies in Japan. However seeing the beautiful photo of a butterfly on a red rose cheered me up!

Such beautiful scenes! Thanks for the vacation trip, Lynn; we're not going anywhere this summer--my husband is waiting on a date for back surgery, so I've pretty much had to put any plans on hold for awhile--so I appreciated this tour.

I'm glad I didn't need the bear repellent, either:) Is there really such a repellent??

Lynn Hunt said...

Rose, I was trying to be funny about the bear repellent (but we do have shower caps and moonshine!) My husband had back surgery a few years ago and has started swimming to build up the muscles in the area. I hope your husband's procedure goes as well.In the meantime you are invited to visit any time!

What time are cocktails served?

Lynn Hunt said...

Six sharp, Les. As I recall from your Florida vacation you enjoy a G&T like my husband. Lemon or lime?

Looks like a wonderful vacation spot indeed! I agree, why take a vacation when you live in the middle of paradise....
